Standards for coaching education and training

The goal of coaching education and training is to impart a professional coaching-attitude and the requisite qualification for professional coaching. The professional standards presented here are based on the "professionalism" of the coach and help them secure and account for acquiring their professional competence and independent thought in their education and training.

Our quality standards for coaching education and training:

  • At least 180 hours over at least 12 months: 
    (1 time hour = 60 minutes). This includes all interactive activities, as well as self-study, preparation of presentations or similar.
    The following distribution of minimum time hours applies:
    -  interactive and time-synchronous (130 time hours)
    -  time-asynchronous in the form of e.g. self-study and peer group work (50 time hours, of which at least 20 hours must be verifiable coaching practice)
  • A senior IOBC coach is accountable for the curriculum
  • The education or training institution is established in the market (at least 2 successful programs)
  • At least one program start every 2 years
  • A plausible entrepreneurial design and implementation concept
  • Transparency
  • High demands regarding:
    • Didactics
    • The personal and professional competences of the teaching staff
    • An engagement with professional and organizational reality
    • Practical relevance

The Coaching Compendium and the IOBC standards

The IOBC Coaching Compendium is a comprehensive document setting out our quality standards for coaches, coaching processes, coaching ethics, and coaching education & training.

Global Code of Ethics

The IOBC is a signatory to and an active contributor to the current revised version of the Global Code of Ethics. The Code is intended as a guide and source of guidance, setting out expectations for best practice in coaching. Particularly against the backdrop of increasing market uncertainty, this commitment sends a strong signal in favour of transparency, quality and international standards in business coaching.
